Yellow House is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s House in Arles where Vincent lived and worked with his door always open so people could see that the artist is a vital part of the community. Vincent suffered most of his life from isolation, loneliness and depression – our mission at Yellow House is to support people suffering with mental health issues through art and creativity.
Yellow House takes a holistic approach to working with excluded young people. Providing on a daily basis, a safe secure environment for those young people normally excluded from decision making enabling them to participate in all aspects of community life, as well as offering young people the opportunity to not only to develop their own social and personal skills but also to develop as active citizens in todays world.
My name is Luke and I’m 19 years old.
I came to Yellow House just over 2 years ago and it has changed my whole life.
When I joined, I had social anxiety, I found it hard to make friends or even just go to the corner shop, so going into a Theatre workshop was a massive challenge, however, I found the atmosphere from the beginning to be comfortable and everybody was very welcoming!
Since joining I have grown as a person, gaining confidence and now I have many friends thanks to the skills I gained at Yellow House. I couldn’t even say what my favourite memory was because there’s so many however I loved when went on holiday to Italy! This year I’m off to university, something I probably wouldn’t have had the confidence to do if I didn’t find Yellow House. I cannot thank this wonderful charity for all the memories and experiences and the friends that I will never forget.
Founded by George Mc Kane in the 1980’s, Yellow House has been working directly with young people across Merseyside every day for almost 40 years, becoming a registered charity in 1993.
Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, George set up the charity named after Van Goghs Yellow House in Arles.
Van Gogh lived and worked at the Yellow House and his door was always open – he did this so people saw the artist to be a vital part of the community and anyone was welcome, something we pride ourselves on here at Yellow House.
