Turning Lives Around

Yellow House has provided thousands of young people not only consistency and stability, but however opportunity also to learn, develop, grow, and experience through being immersed in Art & Culture, informal education, performances, travelling and mindfulness.

Similar to many of the young people we work with each day, Van Gogh himself experienced isolation, loneliness and depression; therefore, one of our missions is to support socially excluded young people by utilising the Arts to increase confidence, self-work and interpersonal skills as well as promoting positive peer groups.

George

Founder

Founder and Mentor of Yellow House. Having worked as a top manager back in the 80’s, George decided to change his life and consequently the entire world by creating Yellow House. His idea was to create a safe space to engage local young people who feel isolated and excluded in all aspects of community and cultural life. Even outside the office, George is always willing to help and support young people in any way.

Rachel

Programmes and Development Lead

Hi, I’m Rachel and I’ve been part of Yellow House since I attended myself as a young person aged fourteen. I’m a massive book worm and enjoy creative writing! Yellow House helped me develop as a person, I was shy and didn’t have much confidence. Yellow House had such an impact on me as a young person it was important to me to remain a part of this and so I came back after university and starting my career as a volunteer; fast forward to now and I’m here at Yellow House as the Programmes and Development Lead. Yellow House is such a beautiful, warm and welcoming place and really does improve the lives of young people – to me Yellow House isn’t just a job – it’s home!

Mark

Trustee

My name is Mark James Craven and I have been a member of Yellow House since I was 13, over 20 years. I first joined Yellow House as a place I could be myself and be treated as an equal not a target for bullying. Through Yellow House I developed skills in Filmmaking, notably editing which got me recognition from BBC, ITV, and various local papers, this made me confident. I tried to take my filmmaking skill to the next level through going to university; this ended up being a disaster which left me broken. Yellow House was there to save me again, they helped me rebuild my confidence and I have since gone on to start a website project called Aspie Heroes which I run through Yellow House.

Hi, my name is Peter and I’ve been a Yellow House member since I was 15. As a young person I took part in many projects and performances around Liverpool, the UK and Europe and I now volunteer as a youth worker. History of Yellow House

Founded by George Mc Kane in the 1980’s, Yellow House has been working directly with young people across Merseyside every day for almost 40 years, becoming a registered charity in 1993.

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, George set up the charity named after Van Goghs Yellow House in Arles.

Van Gogh lived and worked at the Yellow House and his door was always open – he did this so people saw the artist to be a vital part of the community and anyone was welcome, something we pride ourselves on here at Yellow House.
